'Amelie' concludes foreign film festival

In this critically acclaimed 2001 film starring Audrey Tautou as Amélie, a young woman looking for love works in a Montmartre cafe. 

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – April 7, 2017) California Lutheran University will close the fourth season of its International Film Festival with a free screening of the highest-grossing French-language film released in the United States.

The award-winning romantic comedy “Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain” will be shown in French with English subtitles at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Muvico Thousand Oaks 14.

In this critically acclaimed 2001 film starring Audrey Tautou as Amélie, a young woman looking for love works in a Montmartre cafe. She has experienced an unusual and unique childhood. Misdiagnosed with a rare heart condition as a child, she develops an incredible imagination while spending time alone in her room. Even though her mother dies when Amélie is 8 years old and her father exudes coldness, Amélie ultimately flourishes into a charming, healthy, beautiful young woman who strives to positively impact the lives of other people.

The film co-written and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet received numerous awards including the European Film Award for Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematographer; the César Award for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Production Design; the Goya Award for Best European Film and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was nominated for five Academy Awards. 

A musical based on the film opened April 3 on Broadway. 

This film is rated R due to sexual content.

Cal Lutheran’s Department of Languages and Cultures is sponsoring the event as part of the university’s Festival of Scholars week.

The theater is located at 166 W. Hillcrest Drive. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
